Program Note:

Desire lines are paths created where a need to travel between two points arises but no path exists. You often see them in public areas, those snaking lines of dirt where foot traffic has gradually eroded away the grass. They are non-hierarchical, emergent, collective.

While writing this set of pieces, I was thinking about the musical possibilities that these paths suggested, structures that could be built out of musical lines that gradually transform and increase in detail as they recur. And the fact that these structures wanted to move somewhere, desired to push forward, to build momentum, or to sit and

But I was also thinking about desire and music more broadly. What does desirous music sound like? What about music that doesn’t seem to desire anything?
